  • Description

Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that works by increasing the level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, in the brain. It specifically inhibits the reuptake of serotonin into the presynaptic cell, making more serotonin available in the synaptic cleft. This enhancement of serotonin transmission is believed to improve mood, reduce anxiety, and alleviate other symptoms associated with depression and anxiety disorders. Citalopram has a relatively selective action on serotonin, with minimal effects on other neurotransmitters, making it effective for the treatment of conditions like depression and anxiety while generally causing fewer side effects than other antidepressants.

    • The usual starting dose for adults with depression or anxiety disorders is 20mg once daily, typically taken in the morning or evening.
    • The dose may be increased to 40mg daily after 1 week if needed, based on the patient's response and tolerance.
    • For patients with moderate hepatic impairment or elderly individuals, a lower starting dose of 10mg may be recommended, with gradual dose adjustments.
    • For patients with severe liver impairment or poor metabolizers of CYP2C19, the dose should not exceed 20mg daily.
  • In case of Overdose

In case of an overdose of Citalopram 20mg Tablet, immediate medical attention should be sought. Overdose may lead to symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, rapid heart rate, seizures, or changes in consciousness. If you suspect an overdose, contact a healthcare provider or go to the nearest emergency room immediately. Do not attempt to induce vomiting or take any other actions without medical guidance. In case of severe symptoms, such as breathing difficulties, loss of consciousness, or severe dizziness, seek emergency medical care without delay.

  • Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of Citalopram 20mg Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once to make up for the missed dose, as this could increase the risk of side effects. Always follow the dosing instructions provided by your healthcare provider and consult them if you're unsure about how to proceed after missing a dose.

  • How To Use

To use Citalopram 20mg Tablet typically, it should be taken once daily, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet. It's important to take the medication at the same time each day to help you remember and maintain consistent levels in your body. Ensure you complete the full prescribed course of treatment, even if you start feeling better before finishing the medication, to prevent the condition from returning or developing resistance.

    • Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment, as dose adjustments may be necessary.
    • Citalopram may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior, particularly in children, adolescents, and young adults; close monitoring is recommended.
    • Patients should be monitored for signs of serotonin syndrome, especially when used with other serotonergic drugs or drugs that affect serotonin levels.
    • Citalopram may cause QT interval prolongation, particularly in patients with existing heart conditions or those taking other medications that prolong the QT interval.
    • Discontinuation should be gradual, as abrupt cessation can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, insomnia, and irritability.
    • Caution is advised in pregnant or breastfeeding women, as Citalopram may cause harm to the fetus or pass into breast milk.
  • Drug Interactions

Following are the drug interactions for Citalopram 20mg Tablet:

    • Concomitant use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), such as phenelzine, tranylcypromine, or selegiline, is contraindicated, as it can lead to serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition.
    • Citalopram may interact with other serotonergic drugs, such as selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), or triptans, increasing the risk of serotonin syndrome.
    • Use with other central nervous system (CNS) depressants, including alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids, should be avoided or closely monitored, as it may enhance sedative effects and increase the risk of respiratory depression.
    • Caution is advised when combining Citalopram with drugs that affect the CYP450 enzyme system, such as rifampin or St. John’s Wort, as they can alter the drug’s metabolism and efficacy.
    • The risk of bleeding may increase when Citalopram is used concurrently with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), aspirin, or anticoagulants like warfarin.
  • Food Interactions

Following are the food interactions for Citalopram 20mg Tablet:

    • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be avoided, as they may increase the level of Citalopram in the blood, potentially leading to an increased risk of side effects.
    • Alcohol should be consumed with caution, as it can exacerbate the sedative effects of Citalopram and may increase the risk of dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating.
    • It is advised to maintain a balanced diet while on Citalopram to avoid excessive weight gain or loss, which could affect the treatment’s outcome.
  • Storage/Disposal

Citalopram 20mg Tablet should be stored at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Keep it in a secure place out of reach of children and pets. Do not store the medication in the bathroom, as the humidity and heat can affect its effectiveness. If you need to dispose of any unused or expired tablets, follow your healthcare provider's instructions or take them to a local drug take-back program. Do not flush the medication down the toilet or throw it in the trash, as this could harm the environment. Always ensure that the medication is disposed of safely to prevent accidental use or misuse.

    • Do not stop taking Citalopram abruptly without consulting your healthcare provider, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms.

    • Make sure to attend follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and adjust the dosage if needed.
    • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's close to your next dose. Do not double the dose.
