  • Description

Entacapone, Carbidopa, and Levodopa combination therapy works synergistically to manage Parkinson's disease symptoms. Levodopa is a precursor to dopamine, a neurotransmitter deficient in Parkinson's. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted into dopamine, replenishing dopamine levels in the brain. Carbidopa, a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor, prevents the breakdown of levodopa in the bloodstream, allowing more of it to reach the brain. This increases the bioavailability of levodopa and reduces its peripheral side effects. Entacapone, a catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor, further enhances the effectiveness of levodopa by blocking the COMT enzyme, which is responsible for metabolizing dopamine. By inhibiting COMT, entacapone prolongs the action of dopamine in the brain, leading to improved motor function and symptom control in Parkinson's disease patients.
