  • Description

Lansoprazole 30mg capsule is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where acid from the stomach irritates the esophagus, and stomach ulcers. Lansoprazole is also used to treat conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where the stomach produces too much acid, and to help prevent the formation of ulcers due to the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). By decreasing stomach acid production, Lansoprazole helps to relieve symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach discomfort, while promoting the healing of esophageal and gastric ulcers.

  • Ingredients

    • Helps treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition that causes excessive stomach acid production.
    • Used in combination with antibiotics to eradicate *Helicobacter pylori* infections, which cause peptic ulcers.
    • Prescribed to prevent ulcers in patients taking long-term nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
    • Can be used to manage symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn, and indigestion.
    • Helps in the prevention of stomach ulcers caused by stress-related conditions, particularly in critically ill patients.

    • The typical adult dose for GERD and esophagitis is 30mg once daily, taken before a meal.
    • For the treatment of duodenal ulcers, the usual dose is 30mg once daily, taken before a meal for up to 4 weeks.
    • In the treatment of gastric ulcers, the typical dose is 30mg once daily, taken before a meal for up to 8 weeks.
    • For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, the starting dose is 60mg once or twice daily, with adjustments based on the individual's response.
    • When used in combination therapy for *Helicobacter pylori* eradication, the recommended dose is 30mg once or twice daily for 10-14 days along with antibiotics.
    • For the prevention of NSAID-induced ulcers, the typical dose is 15-30mg once daily, depending on the patient's needs.
    • The pediatric dose for GERD or ulcers should be determined by a healthcare provider based on the child's age and weight.
  • In case of Overdose

In case of an overdose of Lansoprazole 30mg capsule, it is important to seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, confusion, dizziness, or blurred vision. Treatment for an overdose typically involves supportive care to manage symptoms. There is no specific antidote for Lansoprazole overdose, so medical professionals may monitor vital signs, administer fluids, and treat any symptoms that arise. If an overdose is suspected, contact a healthcare provider or poison control center right away. Always follow the prescribed dosage to minimize the risk of overdose.

  • Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of Lansoprazole 30mg capsule, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose, as this could increase the risk of side effects. If you are unsure about what to do or have any concerns, consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist for guidance.

  • How To Use

Lansoprazole 30mg capsule typically, it should be taken once or twice daily, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet.

  • When Not to Use

    • Contraindicated in patients with a history of certain types of stomach cancer, as Lansoprazole can mask symptoms of these conditions.
    • Should not be used in cases of severe osteoporosis without monitoring, as long-term PPI use may increase the risk of fractures.

  • Precautions & Warnings

Following are the precautions and warnings for Lansoprazole 30mg capsule:

    • Use with caution in patients with liver disease or reduced liver function, as Lansoprazole is metabolized in the liver, and dosage adjustments may be necessary.
    • Prolonged use of Lansoprazole can lead to low magnesium levels, which may cause symptoms like muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat, and seizures. Regular monitoring of magnesium levels is recommended.
    • Lansoprazole should be used cautiously in individuals with a history of osteoporosis, as long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures.
    • It should be used with care in patients with a history of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, as PPIs may increase the risk of this infection.
    • Patients who have a history of kidney problems or are at risk of kidney damage should use Lansoprazole under the supervision of a healthcare provider, as long-term use can lead to kidney issues.
    • Lansoprazole may mask symptoms of stomach cancer, and it is important to rule out the possibility of cancer before starting treatment.
    • Avoid abrupt discontinuation after long-term therapy, as it may lead to rebound acid hypersecretion. Gradual tapering is recommended if discontinuation is necessary.
    • If you experience any signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, difficulty breathing, or swelling, seek immediate medical attention.
    • Lansoprazole should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary and after consulting with a healthcare provider.
  • Drug Interactions

Following are the drug interactions for Lansoprazole 30mg capsule:

    • Lansoprazole can interact with certain anticoagulants like warfarin, potentially increasing the risk of bleeding. Regular monitoring of INR levels is recommended.
    • It may decrease the absorption of drugs that require an acidic pH for absorption, such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, and iron supplements.
    • Lansoprazole can reduce the effectiveness of drugs like clopidogrel, which is used to prevent blood clots, by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for converting clopidogrel to its active form.
    • Combining Lansoprazole with methotrexate may increase methotrexate levels, leading to toxicity. Dosage adjustments may be required.
    • Concomitant use of Lansoprazole and certain antivirals, such as rilpivirine, can reduce the effectiveness of rilpivirine and should be avoided.
    • The absorption of vitamin B12 may be reduced with long-term use of Lansoprazole, so supplementation may be needed for those on extended treatment.
    • Lansoprazole can interact with drugs that affect the CYP2C19 enzyme, such as diazepam and phenytoin, altering their levels in the body.
    • Use of Lansoprazole with certain diuretics, such as furosemide or thiazide, may increase the risk of low magnesium levels.
    • Caution is advised when using Lansoprazole with other proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers, as it may increase the risk of side effects
  • Food Interactions

Following are the food interactions for Lansoprazole 30mg capsule:

    • Taking Lansoprazole with food may slightly delay its absorption, but it does not significantly reduce its effectiveness. It is generally recommended to take the medication on an empty stomach for best results.
    • Avoid consuming large amounts of caffeine or alcohol, as they can irritate the stomach lining and potentially worsen symptoms of acid reflux or gastritis, which Lansoprazole is used to treat.
    • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Lansoprazole, potentially increasing the drug's levels in the body and increasing the risk of side effects.
    • Eating large, high-fat meals may also slow the absorption of Lansoprazole, which could delay its effectiveness in reducing stomach acid production.
    • While taking Lansoprazole, a balanced diet rich in calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B12 is recommended to counteract potential deficiencies associated with long-term PPI use.
  • Storage/Disposal

Lansoprazole 30mg capsules should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and heat, ideally between 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Keep the medication in its original container, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Do not store the capsule in the bathroom or in areas with high humidity. If the medication has expired or is no longer needed, dispose of it properly by following the disposal instructions provided by your pharmacist or local disposal guidelines. Do not flush the medication down the toilet or throw it in the trash unless instructed to do so. Proper disposal helps prevent accidental ingestion or misuse.
