09-09-2021Researchers of Northwestern University in the US and Soongsil University of South Korea have been working together on creating the World’s smallest ever human-made flying creatures. These creatures can be equipped with microchips and sensors which will enable them to transmit the data from one place to another.
When dropped from the sky, these microchips will be able to monitor both the spread of disease as well as the disastrous effects of environmental pollution. This study is heavily inspired by the aerodynamics behavior of wind spread disease of known trees such as maple and dandelion.
The main goal of the study was to have a deep understanding of the shape and dispersal rate.

“We've been able to build structures that fall in a more stable trajectory at slower terminal velocities than equivalent seeds.", said Rogers who is currently leading the study.
These micro flyers resemble the star-shaped tristellateia vine seeds that are documented for their small blades. This structure provides them a fast dispersal rate with which they are able to land farther from their point of origin.
One of the main advantages of this type of technology is that it has a wide range for its uses. From monitoring the rate of pollutants in the air to measure the disease frequency this technology has several benefits.
Another perk of this technology is that it can deploy its self after its usage so the chances of environmental degradation are very slim.
